Trimming is the fix, and it shouldn't require installing an audio suite. How to trim audio

Reading the waveform like a sound engineer

The waveform is a map of loudness over time, and it makes blind trimming unnecessary. Tall dense regions are speech or music; flat thin lines are silence; sudden isolated spikes are coughs, door slams and table bumps. To find your cut points, locate the visual landmarks — the silence before a sentence begins, the gap between songs — and aim your start/end values there. Cutting in silence (even a tenth of a second of it) produces clean edits without clipped syllables.

Precision tips

  • Decimals are your scalpel: if 34 seconds clips the first word, try 33.6.
  • Leave breathing room: a 0.2–0.5 s pad of silence at both ends sounds natural; razor-tight cuts feel abrupt.
  • Iterate freely: trimming is instant and the source stays loaded — adjust the numbers and cut again until the preview is right.
  • Long file, several pieces? Run the tool once per segment; each pass downloads its own clip.

What trimming does to quality

The cut itself is exact — samples inside your range are copied untouched, so the trimmed audio is identical to that section of the source. The export step then encodes WAV losslessly or MP3 at solid quality. Practical guidance: choose WAV when the clip is headed into an editor or another tool (like our Volume or Speed changers — chain them in WAV and convert to MP3 only at the very end), and MP3 when the clip is the final product going to a phone, chat or website.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the exact second to cut at?

Use the waveform: silence is flat, speech is dense. Get close visually, cut, listen to the preview, and refine with decimal values (33.6, 33.4…). Two or three iterations usually lands a perfect edit.

Can I cut the middle out and keep both ends?

This tool extracts one continuous range per pass. To remove a middle section, trim the part before it and the part after it as two clips — then, if needed, rejoin them in any editor.

Does trimming lower the audio quality?

The selected samples are copied exactly as they are. Exporting as WAV adds zero loss; MP3 export applies one high-quality encoding pass — fine for delivery, and avoidable by choosing WAV for intermediate work.

Can I make an iPhone ringtone with this?

You can produce the audio: trim your 20–30 second section and export. iPhones require the M4R container installed via Finder/iTunes — export WAV here, convert/ rename in that workflow. Android phones accept a trimmed MP3 directly.
